April has been proclaimed as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month in Sequoyah County after commissioners signed the two proclamations last Monday. Cindy Smith, crime victim investigator for the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office, commended the commissioners for their support to bring awareness to sexual assault and the difference it brings to providing education and information to the public. Donna Owens, coordinator of the Multi-disciplinary (child abuse) for the Sequoyah County Child Abuse Task Force, said the national proclamation was first signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1983.
