Webbers Falls teams split ARS opening-round games after splitting road games with Braggs
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Webbers Falls High School basketball teams experienced a pair of splits over a two-day stretch this week.

After splitting their regu l ar- s che du le d road games Tuesday at Braggs, the Webbers Falls squads experienced the same thing Wednesday afternoon in their own Arkansas River Shootout at Webbers Falls Event Center.

On Tuesday, the Lady Warriors defeated the Braggs Lady Wildcats 55-21, but the Warriors lost to the seventh-ranked Braggs Wildcats 88-30.

In Wednesday’s opening-round of the Arkansas River Shootout, the Lady Warriors tamed the Keota Lady Lions 54-31, but the Warriors lost a heartbreaking 43-41 decision to the Whitesboro Bulldogs.

The final two days of the tournament were postponed due to Thursday’s snowstorm.

In the Webbers Falls girls’ road win over Braggs, the Lady Warriors (6-3) pitched a shutout in the first half, outscoring the Lady Wildcats 12-0 in the first quarter and 17-0 in the second period for a 29-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

For the game, Cheyanne Herrier and Bailey Ward each scored 10 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Abbie Patterson with seven points, Kailey Mannon and Madison Smith with six points each, Payton Shanks with four points, Bridgette Baer and River Harrison each with three points and Hannah Kay Mason, Audri Spears and Paisley Turley had two points apiece.

In the Webbers Falls boys’ loss to Braggs, the Wildcats jumped out to a 31-9 lead and were never headed.

In defeat, Chevy Cole led Webbers Falls with 11 points, followed by Gunner Shelby with five points, Luke Pierce and Brutus Robinson with three points each and Thadan Yandell, Elliott Kunkel, Caden Carter and Trysten Wilbourn with two points apiece.

In the girls’ tournament win over Keota, the Lady Warriors broke a 12-all tie after the first quarter by outscoring the Lady Lions 19-4 in the second period to take a 31-16 halftime lead, which became a 39-23 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

For the game, Baer scored a game-high 18 points and Herrier added 12 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Mannon with eight points, Spears and Ward with four points each, Smith and Harrison each with three points and Patterson with two points.

In the boys’ tournament loss, the Warriors (4-5) had a chance to tie the game at 43 in the final seconds to send it into overtime, but no such luck as the Bulldogs held them off for the two-point win.

In defeat, Cole scored a game-high 17 points and Yandell added 10 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Pierce with six points and Kunkel and Robinson with four points apiece.
