OKLAHOMA CITY — History was made by the Gore Pirates wrestling team at the Class 3A State Tournament, which took place last Thursday through last Saturday at O.G.&E. Pavilion, a.k.a. “The ‘New’ Big House.”
Thanks to three wrestlers, 165-pounder Jaydan Gates, 215-pounder Kaydin McCartney and 157-pounder Devon Mannon, the Pirates got their first-ever individual wins at state.
Both Gates and Mc-Cartney were third in their respective weight classes.
Gates opened with a 6-5 win over Salina’s Brogan O’Neal in Thursday’s “wrestle-in” match, then lost 7-6 to Blackwell’s Ryder Short in the state quarterfinals. Gates bounced back with a 12-8 win over Hobart’s Jack Madden in the conso-lation semifinals, then beat Watonga’s Auden Perez 7-3 in the thirdplace match.
McCartney got a 16-4 major decision over Oklahoma City Heritage Hall’s Canon Bronson in the state quarterfinals, then lost 10-8 to Comanche’s Kanon Clift in the state semifinals. McCartney won his consolation semifinal match by pinning Marlow’s Elijah Wagner in 5:30, then getting a 17-2 technical fall over Perry’s Logan Cook to win third place.
Mannon went 1-2 at state, winning his Thursday “wrestle-in” match by pinning Marlow’s Caleb Davis in 1:30, but losing his state quarterfinal match by a 21-3 technical fall to Salina’s Connor Hess and his consolation quarterfinal match 1511 to Heritage Hall’s Gannon Sanders.
