Vian Wolverines finish fourth at Ripley Tournament
By David Seeley Sports Editor,

The Vian Wolverines baseball team finished fourth at last weekend’s Ripley Spring Break Tournament.

After beating Barnsdall 13-1 in four innings in last Thursday’s opening-round game, the Wolverines lost their championship semifinal 16-15 in eight innings to host Ripley last Friday night, then lost the third-place game 24-9 in five innings to Hammon.

The Wolverines opened Spring Break week play with a 19-3 three-inning road rout of Hulbert last Wednesday.

In the Ripley Spring Break Tournament opening-round rout of Barnsdall, Michael Pole-cat (3-1) threw a fourinning, complete-game four-hitter with four strikeouts.

The Wolverines got Polecat all the run support he needed with a six-run second inning and a four-run third inning for a 10-0 lead. A three-run fourth inning put the game into runrule status.

For the contest, Manny Terrill was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, three runs batted in and three runs scored, Drake Collins was 3-for-4 with a double, five RBIs and a run scored, Polecat was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Adoff Stahl was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored for Vian.

In the championship semifinal tournament loss to Ripley, after the Wolverines scored once in the seventh inning to tie the game at 13-all to force extra innings and took a 1513 lead in the eighth inning on a two-run home run by Riley Ellis, the Warriors scored three runs in their half of the eighth inning to get the walk-off semifinal victory.

In defeat, Terrill was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Clayton Thomas was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, Stahl was 3-for-6 with two runs scored, Polecat was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored and Ellis was 2-for-3 with a double, his first homer of the season and four RBIs for Vian.

Zayden Cheater (21) suffered his first loss in relief as he went the final three innings but allowed the game-winning run. Terrill got the start and went the first three innings with five strikeouts. Thomas went the fourth inning.

In the Ripley Tournament third-place game loss to Hammon, the Warriors rallied from a 2-1 second-inning deficit by scoring 11 runs in the third inning to take a 12-2 lead. After the Wolverines cut their deficit to 12-9 with a five-run third inning and a tworun fourth inning, the Warriors put the game into run-rule status with a 12-run fifth inning.

In defeat, Draighton Fletcher was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Collins was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Colten Smith was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI and Stahl was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Vian.

Rylan Lane (0-2) suffered the loss, losing 2.1 innings with two strikeouts. Carlos Rautenberg went the next two innings with four Ks. Collins got the last two outs, one of which came on a strikeout.

In the road victory over Hulbert, the Wolverines broke open a close game with a 13run second inning to take a 17-3 lead after two innings. A two-run third inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Fletcher was 3-for-3 with two doubles, four runs scored and a run batted in, Polecat was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs and Ellis was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI for Vian.

Cheater got the win, going the first two innings with three strikeouts. Lane pitched a scoreless third inning with a strikeout.
