Since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and the federal government’s actions to help alleviate some of the financial stress, the cons have come out of the woodwork. Since the government has agreed to increase the amount paid out in unemployment, there has been an increase in the number of fraudulent unemployment claims across the country and Sequoyah County is not immune. Sequoyah County Sheriff Larry Lane said his department has been receiving calls nearly every day of people complaining someone has filed for unemployment under their name. One woman reported that someone had filed for unemployment under her name and she doesn’t even work, and Lane said two of his deputies have fallen victim to someone trying to file for unemployment under their names. “This has been going on since COVID-19 started,” Lane said. “We get one or two calls a day and they don’t always go through dispatch. They will call me or they will post on my Facebook, and I don’t check that all the time, maybe sometimes when I get home.”
