Can You Understand?
By Pastor Michael Martin Vian Baptist Church,

Deuteronomy 28:49 “The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;” I chose this statement from God’s Word for two reasons. True, it was written to Israel and was a consequence of their nation turning to idols instead of worshipping and serving the God of Creation. This verse brought two diverse thoughts. One, have we placed ourselves in the same situation as Israel did? Have changed the United States from a God-fearing people to a people that do not believe in God or care if He exists or not? I think you already know the answer to that.

Our Nation was founded on the principles of the Word of God. We were considered a Christian Nation until the last 20 years. After we removed God from our schools, forbid the Ten Commandments from public view and banned prayer, our country has fallen from that title. The last poll taken (Gallup) asked, “How important is God in your Life?” Only 46 % said “Very Important” a decrease from 61% only a few years before. Are we placing ourselves in a position that God can no longer bless us?

The second thought is about our Understanding. Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

It is important to note that lost people cannot understand the Scriptures because they lack the ability to understand God. 1Corinthians 2:14 “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

I had a man in Africa mock my belief in God. He mocked the ability of God to speak to us through the Scriptures. He asked me to read from the Bible to see if I got a “Bingo”. That is what he called someone receiving enlightenment from Scripture. I took the challenge and opened the Bible. I read in John 15:26 “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:” In that instant I realized that the Comforter was the Holy Spirit and that the knowledge of God’s existence could only come from the Holy Spirit testifying of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Now the Scripture in 1 Corinthians 2:14 also made perfect sense. It brought to memory another Scripture. Luke 11:9-10 “And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”

Now another thought made sense. Only those who seek God are able to find Him. Only those what desire to understand the Word of God can seek the Spiritual application of Scripture to the Human condition (his heart).

Scripture after Scripture unrolled to me in that instant. But did the man that challenged me listen to what God had unfolded to me? No, this man mocked even that. “I just wanted to see a man receive a Bingo!” he said.

1Corinthians 2:14 “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

If you seek God, He will be found by you. If you seek some magical existence, you are not seeking God, but are listening to another spiritual power. 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

Need some help finding God, attend a Bible Believing Church. “Don’t all of them believe the Bible?” you ask. No. Some spend more time correcting the Bible than they do preaching it as it was written. Come visit us and see the difference.
