Vian Lady Wolverines beat Gore, get two wins over Roland

The Vian Lady Wolverines went 3-1 last week, ending the week with a 10-2 home win over the Gore Lady Pirates at Armstrong Park.

However, last Wednesday, the Lady Wolverines had their 10-game winning streak snapped by losing 7-2 to Henryetta at Armstrong Park in a game that got rained out Sept. 12.

The week got started with a Vian home doubleheader sweep of the Roland Lady Rangers by scores of 4-1 and 13-1 on Sept. 11 at Armstrong Park. In the home win over Gore, the Lady Wolverines (20-6) broke a 1-all tie with a seven-run third inning and a single run in the fourth inning to take a 9-1 lead after four innings.

Foe the game, Maisie Wells was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored, Hanna Mattingly was 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored and Kala Gibbins was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI for Vian.

Gibbins (18-5) got the win, striking out 11 batters in five innings and scattering five hits.

In defeat, Cadi Shoemake doubled with an RBI, Emily Daily singled and scored Gore’s lone run and Sophie O’Connor, Natalie Casteel and Kynley Webb all singled for the Lady Pirates (9-15). Cheyenne Davidson took the loss, despite fanning three batters in 4.2 innings.

In the opener against Roland, the Lady Wolverines scored single runs in the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead, then doubled their advantage to 4-0 with a two-run fifth inning.

For the game, Hanna Mattingly was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, Akeelah Truett was 2-for-3 and Gibbins hit a solo home run.

Gibbins got the win, striking out 10 batters.

In the nightcap, Vian scored twice in each of the first and third innings for a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Wolverines put away the game with a nine-run seventh inning.

For the game, Wells was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, LaKaila Drew was 3-for-5 with a double, a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored, Mattingly was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs, Gibbins was 2-for-5 with two runs score and an RBI and Rayleigh Terrill was 2-for-4 with a double.

Gibbins got the win, striking out four batters in seven innings.

In last Wednesday’s loss to Henryetta, the Lady Black Knights broke a 1-all tie with a two-run sixth inning for a 3-1 lead.

After the Lady Wolverines cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning on Terrill’s sacrifice fly, Henryetta put away the game with a four-run seventh inning.

Vian broke the scoreless tie on a wild pitch, scoring Mattingly, for a 1-0 lead after two innings before Henryetta scored in the fourth inning to knot the game at 1-all.

In defeat, Mattingly was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, while Truett doubled for Vian, which saw its 10-game winning streak snapped.

Gibbins took the loss, despite striking out five batters in seven innings.
