Vian basketball teams suffer district losses to Warner, playing in regional consolation bracket

Things did not go the way of the Vian High School basketball teams in the Class 2A District Tournament title games against the host Warner teams on Friday night at Warner Event Center.

The Lady Eagles flew past the Lady Wolverines 62-26, then the Eagles tamed the Wolverines 48-37.

The district final losses dropped the Lady Wolverines (2-20) and Wolverines (7-17) into the loser’s bracket for the remainder of the postseason, which will resume at Thursday afternoon’s Class 2A Regional Tournament at Warner Event Center where the Vian girls will meet Wister at 1 p.m. and the Wolverines will face Panama at 2:30 p.m., with the winners playing in the regional consolation semifinals at 1 p.m. (girls) and 2:30 p.m. (boys) Friday at Wilburton. The regional consolation semifinal winners will advance to the consolation finals at 1 p.m. (girls) and 2:30 p.m. (girls) Saturday. The Class 2A Regional Tournament consolation champions will advance to the Class 2A Area Tournament, which will take place Feb. 29-March 2 at Roland High School’s Ranger Dome.

It also was a rough Senior Night on Feb. 13 for Vian as both visiting Eufaula teams posted wins. The Lady Ironheads started the night with a 57-36 win over the Lady Wolverines, then the Ironheads got past the Wolverines 69-60.

In the girls’ district finals loss, a 3-point basket by Vian’s Halli Russell put the Lady Wolverines ahead 7-5 with 3:32 left in the first quarter. Unfortunately, that was the one and only lead for the Lady Wolverines on the night.

The Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Wolverines 10-2 over the final 3:32 of the quarter to take a 15-9 lead into the second period, in which Warner’s 19-6 secondquarter upped its advantage to 34-15 at halftime en route to a 45-19 lead going into the final period.

In defeat, Russell led Vian with nine points, followed by Annie Neal, Avery Wright and Rayleigh Terrill with three points each and Tina Rautenberg, Skyelar Locust, Kala Gibbins and Maisie Wells with two points apiece.

In the boys’ district finals loss, a pair of free throws by Masyn Wright with 40 seconds left in the first quarter tied the game at 11, but the Eagles outscored them 13-6 in the second period to take a 24-17 lead at the half, which became a 36-29 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

In defeat, Yonsi Grass scored 16 points and Wright added 12 points to lead Vian, followed by Joe O’Neil with five points, Trace Sanders with three points and Jacob Brannick with a free throw.

In the girls’ Senior Night loss, the Lady Ironheads doubled the Lady Wolverines 20-10 in the first quarter, then used a 21-10 second period to up the advantage to 41-20 at halftime en route to a 54-31 lead going into the fourth quarter.

In defeat, Wright led the Lady Wolverines with 20 points, followed by Neal with seven points, Russell with three points, Terrill and Kiah Richardson with two points apiece and Wells and Rebel Simon with a free throw apiece.

In the boys’ Senior Night loss, the Ironheads got out to a 1918 lead after a quarter, which became a 36-28 halftime advantage. The Wolverines outscored them 15-14 to cut the deficit to 50-43 after three quarters, but the Ironheads outscored them 19-17 in the final period to keep Vian at bay.

In defeat, Vian put a trio of players into double figures, led by 17 points from Grass, 15 points from O’Neil and 14 from points from Wright. Brannick scored eight points, while Sanders added six points.
