E.O. “Jr.” Smith, 73, of Vian (Republican), has announced his candidacy for state representative of District 2. Smith’s family story is one of perseverance and hard work, which led him to be a successful business owner for nearly three decades.
A dedicated community leader, Smith serves on the Vian Board of Trustees and has served for nearly seven years as a Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor. He is a big supporter of education, schools and little league sports.
“I have supported education and schools for many years, and have also been a big booster because I believe in our rural schools and educators,” Smith said. “I will be a friend to education and our kids, giving our teachers the resources they need.”
Smith said he feels like he will have a broader agenda when it comes to serving as state representative.
“I won’t just be serving a few in Sequoyah County, but everyone in Sequoyah County,” he said. “I am and will continue to be easily accessible. I answer my phone from 8 a.m. to 12 midnight, seven days a week. And if you’re seeking answers or want to know about something, give me a call. It might not be the answer you want to hear but I will get you an answer. I don’t want anyone to be left hanging.”
Smith said he’s tired of reading all the monthly reports that show Sequoyah County in the poverty level.
“There’s no reason why we can’t grow and do better,” he said. “And make the community improvements we need and deserve. We need to grow jobs and economic opportunities by attracting new business, promoting trade schools and providing career services for our veterans.”
Smith said he also supports to protect the right to life and defend the Second Amendment, and is a leader when it comes to funding the new Sallisaw Veterans Center.
“I feel we have the right to bear arms living in Sequoyah County because it’s a family tradition for most of us,” he said. “We need to continue to defend it.”
“I challenge you to pull my opponent’s records of voting and look at mine for the Cherokee Nation,” he said. “You will see that I will be a very active representative for you.”
