Tabernacle #3
By Pastor Michael Martin Vian Baptist Church,

Hebrews 9:12-14 “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” So far we have entered into the place of worship by a single gate, we have needed to face the brazen altar. We have washed in the brazen laver to cleanse our work and walk. We have entered into the Holy Place again by a single doorway. Inside we found the Light of the World, the sweet smell of our prayers before God and the Bread of life.

Now we are ready to enter into the last part of the Tabernacle of Worship. The writer of Hebrews refers to it as the Holy Place. It is much more and deeper understanding is needed to understand it properly.

There is only one thing we see as we move through the veil. But not so fast, for the veil is as import to us as all the other things we have studied. The veil is the separation of sinful men from a Holy God. The wrath of God will be felt if we approach His Holy Place. The veil shields us from the wrath of God.

Lets talk about the one piece of furinture within and I will come back to the veil. Inside is the Ark of the Covenant of God with Israel. It is uniquely made. It is wooden speaking to the humanity of God the Son. It is covered with gold plating speaking to the royalty of the Son of God. It has Cherubum guarding what God calls the Mercy Seat. The particulars of it are found in Exodus 25.

Inside the Ark are the tablets of stone on which is written the ten most important laws of all. With the lid in place, the mercy seat covers the law. The Cherubum guard it as a Holy Place and it was to Israel and it is symbolic to the reaminder of the human race.

The Law contained inside the Ark of the Covenant judges men even today. In the Old Testament, the priest approached the Holy Place with a basin of blood from the yearly sacrifice for the sins of Israel and with much fear and trembling approached the Mercy Seat and poured the blood onto the Mercy Seat to cover the Law. The innocent blood of the sacrifice covered the law so that it did not judge the people for their sin and break out upon them to punish them for their sin.

The Ten Commandments is the most basic and the most important laws of God given to man. With only ten basic commands, you would think man would be able to live by them without breaking any, right? No, I am afraid not. We are a sinful people and we actually desire sin more than we desire God and His blessings.

It all began in the garden of Eden when the serpent (Satan) asked Eve, ‘Yea, had God said?’ From that very first question, man lost his innocense and the very image of God. Down through history man has questioned the Word of God, rideculing it as fables, or writings of old men, or tales to frighten people into repentance. It all came from the serpent and continues today exactly the same way.

Let’s go back to the veil for a minute. Those in Christ have nothing to fear from the Law. Hebrews 10:19-20 “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.”

The Scriptures tell us of a “new and living way”. No longer was the sacrifice of bulls and goats necessary. Hebrews 10:4 “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.” The birth, life, death, and resurrection of the Saviour has given us this new and living way to God and takes us to the very essence of God, our Father. The scriptures go so far as telling us we can call Him, Abba, Father, which is the most personal pronoun used for father (almost like saying Daddy).

Romans 8:15-17 “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”

The last thing I want to share with you is the order of the items we have studied. For man, it is the gate, the altar, the laver, the holy place with light, prayers, and bread, then comes the holy place with its mercy seat, to cover the law and bringing companionship with Almighty God.

For God, it begins with the sacrifice of His son, to permanently cover the Mercy Seat. Jesus is the Bread of life, the light of the world, and mediator of our prayers. Then comes the cleansing of our work and walk, the altar of scarifice and the gate for entry.

All of this was planned before the foundation of the world. Mankind was planned, the World and all of its ecosystems were planned in advance of creation. Jesus was designated as the Saviour even then.

Hebrews 10:5-9 “Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.”

The body spoken of was at first the Baby Jesus. He was born to die for the sins of the world, your sins, my sins, everyone’s sins.

All that is necessary is to accept Him as your Lord and Saviour and you will be saved. Why wouldn’t you do that today?
