Webbers Falls softball team still seeking first win of season
By David Seeley Sports Editor,

It was a rough opening week of the 2024 fast-pitch softball season for the Webbers Falls Lady Warriors.

The Lady Warriors, who were rained out in their season-opening home game vs. Gans on Aug. 12, suffered a pair of losses on Aug. 13 at Porum, losing 14-4 and 16-0.

Then, the Lady Warriors went 0-2 in last weekend’s Weleetka Tournament, falling 2-1 to Haileyville and being eliminated by tournament- host Weleetka 10-2.

In the Game 1 loss to Porum, the Lady Warriors (0-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead on an RBI single by Gracie Sturgell and a two-out, two-RBI double by Karla Bonilla, but it was all Porum after that as the Lady Panthers scored six runs in the first inning and four runs in the third inning for a 9-3 lead.

In defeat, Bonilla hit a two-run double, Sturgell hit an RBI single and scored once, Bridgette Baer and Bentley Ward each singled, Lextyn Chappell scored once and Katie Frazier scored twice for Webbers Falls.

Rhilee Jones (0-3) suffered the loss, although she recorded three strikeouts in three innings.

In the nightcap, Porum pitcher Leia Johnson three a two-hitter as the only offense mustered by the Lady Warriors was a pair of singles — one each by Baer and Ward.

The Lady Panthers gave Johnson all the run support needed with a 10-run first inning.

Ward (0-1) suffered the loss.

In the loss to Haileyville, Haileyville scored twice in the first inning. Baer’s oneout, RBI single scored Shkyra Scruggs to cut the Webbers Falls’ deficit to 2-1, but the time limit was reached to end the game.

In defeat, Baer hit an RBI single, Sturgell singled and Scruggs scored once for Webbers Falls.

Jones suffered the loss, despite striking out three batters in three innings and throwing a four-hitter.

In the loss to Weleetka, the Lady Outlaws scored three runs in the first inning for a 3-0 lead.

A Weleetka error on Ward’s grounder with two outs scored Frazier to cut the deficit to 3-1 after an inning, but the Lady Warriors (0-4) got no closer as Weleetka scored twice in the second inning and five runs in the third inning to take a 10-1 lead.

In defeat, Frazier dou-bled and scored once for the Lady Warriors.

Jones took the loss, although she fanned two batters in three innings.
