Webbers Falls offense scores four TDs in first scrimmage of season
By David Seeley Sports Editor

ARKOMA — The Webbers Falls Warriors football team got its first game-like situation against Tulsa’s Crossover Prep and two Arkansas schools — Cornerstone Christian Academy from Kennett, Ark., and Southwest Christian from Little Rock, Ark. — last Thursday night at Mustang Field.

Brutus Robinson threw two touchdown passes to Gunner Shelby, and Aiden Turley and Chevy Cole each rushed for a TD.

“For being a Week 1 scrimmage, I thought we played pretty well,” Webbers Falls football coach Trent Holt said. “Offensively, we played pretty good football. Our (offensive) line did a pretty good job, and our running backs ran tough and broke some runs. We ran over a few people. We threw the ball well. Brutus threw the ball well. Overall offensively, I thought we played pretty well for a Week 1 scrimmage. I can’t complain a whole lot.”

However, the defensive unit for the Warriors did not play as well as Holt had hoped.

“Our linebacker play wasn’t the greatest yet,” he said. “They were flat on filling their gaps. Our cornerbacks got to get better tackling. We missed a few tackles that would cost us in a game. We had a couple busted coverages, but some of those were with our (No.) 2s and 3s in there. Overall, it’s something we can definitely build on.”

The Warriors will get one more preseason tune-up opportunity next Thursday night when they welcome the Cave Springs Hornets and the Wetumka Chieftains to Smokey Cox Stadium for a three-way scrimmage beginning at 6 p.m. Holt said one area to be dealt with in the final preseason scrimmage will be to pass the ball more than in last week’s scrimmage.

“Our offensive line played well,” he said. “We just have to get better at that. I’ve got a couple of new ones in there. We’re still trying to figure out who’s going where. We’re going to try to throw a little bit more. We threw it several times (in last Thursday’s scrimmage). With our three running backs, we’ll be able to run the football against people. If we can get our offensive line solidified, we’re going to be able to run it. They protected (quarterback Brutus Robinson last Thursday night). I want to throw the ball more this week.”

Holt also was glad the Warriors came out of last Thursday night’s scrimmage relatively healthy.

“We have some bumps and bruises,” he said. “We came out healthy, and that’s one of the big keys — and we did.”
