God and a GPS
By Pastor Tim Perkins First Southern Baptist Church, Gore

Now, I will admit I do like to go to Facebook and watch some of the reels. Some of them are totally stupid and some are pretty good. I watch to usually get a good laugh. And, every once in a while you find one that can make you say, “WOW, that was really good!” I had one of those last week.

It was a short video by Michael, Jr. (don’t know last name). He is a Christian comedian. He was telling that he gets to talk to celebrities every now and then. One day a particular celebrity asked him to completely explain God to him. Michael said, “If I were to completely explain God to you, God would not be God, I would be God (Michael, Jr.) and I can’t grow hair!” (Michael, Jr. is bald also) With this answer the celebrity then asked, “Well, then, how is it I can do all this stuff that I am doing (and you know what I’m doing) and God still wants a relationship with me?” What a question and what a question most people probably would like to know an answer.

Michael, Jr.’s answer was spectacular and I would like to share with you his response. It goes something like this: God is like a navigation system on your car. You put in the location of where you are and the location of the place you want to go. Then it gives you directions on how to get there. But, if you go ten blocks and it tells you to turn right and you turn left, the GPS doesn’t just abandon you and let you be lost. No, it recalculates what you need to do to get to where you need to be based upon where you are. The only problem is that if you keep making the wrong turns, the road conditions may be different and you may run out of time. So you have to be sensitive and listen to that voice so you can make the right choice to get where you are supposed to be.

What an analogy/answer. Just the other day I was following the GPS looking for a particular location, and I kept making the wrong turns. The GPS recalculated (rerouted) me to a way that would get me back on track to the location to which I wanted to go. There have been times I knew where I was going but used the GPS for fun and would make deliberate wrong turns or go an alternate route to see what the GPS did. I would look at the screen and see the wheel spinning with the words rerouting and then another set of directions would come up.

My point to this? First, isn’t it great that God loves us regardless of who, what, where, when or how we are. He loves us, just not what we are doing, where we are at, who we are with, when we…(you fill in the blank) or how we are.

Secondly, He always has a route that leads us back to Him. It may be as simple as making a right or left turn from where we are (veering away from sin) or it may be that we need to make a U-turn and leave the people, places, and things that are keeping us from God.

Finally, getting back to, or even getting to, God may take us on some roads that are new or unfamiliar and could possibly be difficult, but they get us to Him. The route can be frightening, also. But, if we had just followed directions earlier, the road would be much easier and more smooth.

And finally, just as a GPS doesn’t say “Way to go dummy, you are really lost this time. I am tired of giving you directions and you don’t listen. Find your own way out of this!” God will not abandon us to ourselves. He is always there routing and rerouting us to our final destination. We just have to listen and follow directions.

What a wonderful thought and thing this is! Romans 5:8 tells us that “God demonstrates His own love toward us…” and John 3:16 tells us that ”God so loved the world that He…” 1 John 4:7 tells us that God is love. This is why God reroutes us to a path that leads to Him…He loves us.

Bro. Tim
