Webbers Falls Warriors drop district opener to Wilson, welcomes Wesley Christian this week
By David Seeley Sports Editor

HENRYETTA — Webbers Falls football coach Trent Holt was concerned that his team being not at full strength due to injuries and other issues was not going to be a good sign of success when the Warriors opened District BII-4 play last Thursday night against the host Wilson Tigers. Unfortunately, his fears came to fruition as the Tigers handled the Warriors 46-0.

The Warriors (3-3 overall, 0-1 in district play) had their chances against the Tigers (4-1, 1-0).

“We just didn’t match up well with them at all,” Holt said. “They have some really good receivers, and we couldn’t match up. Offensively, we moved the ball up and down the field. We had like 20 first downs. We dropped three passes, one for sure that could have been a touchdown. We fumbled another time on the 1-yard line. We had the chances to score, but we just didn’t do it. We could have scored 30 (points) or so, but we just didn’t have any answer for them defensively. We had some kids out.”

The Warriors will return home this week to entertain the Wesleyan Christian School Mustangs, who come in at 0-6 overall, 0-1 in district play after they lost their district opener 56-6 to Copan. The Mustangs lost all their non-district games as well — 48-0 to Yale, 64-8 to Keota, 64-14 to Claremore Christian, 41-7 to Foyil and 32-7 to Wetumka.

However, Holt said the Mustangs have the potential to be a formidable opponent.

“They throw the ball a lot,” he said. “They have a couple of kids who can go catch it. I don’t think they’re, speed wise, as quick and fast as the kids are from Wilson, but they’ve got some good receivers who can catch it. The quarterback throws it pretty decent. Defensively, they don’t run anything special, but they play pretty good defense.”

The game currently is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Smokey Cox Stadium, but Holt said there is a good chance the game time — and even the date of the game — could change due to the shortage of referee crews.

Holt said he is hoping the same crew that will be working Gore’s Thursday night game can do his game that same afternoon at 2:30 p.m. — if Wesleyan Christian agrees to it.

Otherwise, the game likely is going to end up taking place at 7 p.m. Friday.
