Light and Darkness

Light and Darkness
By Pastor Michael Martin,

Genesis 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

A believer has two principles at work within him. In his natural estate he was subject to one principle only, which was darkness; now light has entered, and the two principles disagree.

Mark the apostle Pauls words in the seventh chapter of Romans: “I find then a law, that, when I would i~hi ir<-h d° g°°d’ is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: but I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin, which is in my members.” How is this state of things occasioned?

“The Lord divided the light from the darkness.” Darkness, by itself, is quiet and undisturbed, but when the Lord sends in light, there is a conflict, for the one is in opposition to the other: a conflict which will never cease till the believer is altogether light in the Lord.

If there be a division within the individual Christian, there is certain to be a division without. So soon as the Lord gives to any man light, he proceeds to separate himself from the darkness around. He secedes from a merely worldly religion of outward ceremonial, for nothing short of the gospel of Christ will now satisfy him. And he withdraws himself from worldly society and frivolous amusements, and seeks the company of the saints, for “We know we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren.” The light gathers to itself, and the darkness to itself. What God has divided, let us never try to unite. C.H. Spurgeon from Evening by Evening Devotional Remember that darkness happily works in the “children of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2). It does not cause chaos as it quietly changed the natural goodness of a man in to wickedness. The devil corrupts, lies and steals our natural goodness to replace it with his version of what the world should be like and the wickedness that typifies the world of sin.

The Holy Spirit came into the world to reprove this darkness. John 16:8 “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:” When the Holy Spirit (light) reproves the darkness then the conflict that Spurgeon spoke of begins. Chaos comes in the life of he who hears of the light or accepts the light as truth. Every foul being from darkness will attack the light, because the light reveals what is going on in the darkness. It turns on a spotlight to illuminate the lies the devil has quietly been teaching to the world at large and to individuals in particular.

The subtlety of darkness was first spoken of in the Garden of Eden when the serpent asked Eve, “Yea, had God said?” Then it contradicted Gods word completely “ye shall not surely die.” (Genesis 3:4) There are those in the world who claim to be the “enlightened ones”. They claim to know more than the masses. They think themselves smarter than the average man. They are living in darkness and being fed lie after lie. They pressure good people to accept things that are condemned in the Bible because in their “great wisdom” they think it is foolishness to cling to an archaic old Book, that they say is outdates at best and false from the beginning at worst.

They are all kinds of “enlightened” men claiming the Bible was not written by God, but rather from the imagination of man. Let me give you one of several verses to dispel this.

2Peter 1:19-21 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Notice that this scripture starts with a light shining in a dark place and ends with the Holy Ghost guiding holy men as to what they recorded.

I do not have the time to prove to you that the Holy Ghost is part of the Godhead, but you need to believe it. We have a triune Godhead, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each part of the entire nature of God.

The Holy Ghost is the one who contests darkness and He is the one to bring chaos when he turns the light of God’s Word on “dark places”, places where lies have hidden for years un challenged and secure in their place in the life of the unbeliever. The Word of God has the ability to complete change a man from a man of darkness, a child of disobedience to a man that knows the truth. The tells of the Word will set up free from the darkness. John 8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

I need to end this, but I encourage you to read your Bible. If you need one we give them free to any that asks. If you are new to the Bible start in the Book of John. It will show you Gods great love for you.
