Former Vian Lady Wolverine places third in CASC Lady Viking Open
By David Seeley Sports Editor

Former Vian Lady Wolverine wrestler Taya Hunt placed third in last Sunday’s CASC Lady Viking Open, which took place at Mick Thompson FIeldhouse at the CASC-Poteau campus.

After receiving a firstround bye, Hunt beat Oklahoma City University’s Rayleigh Fisher 12-8 in the championship quarterfinals but lost by pinfall in 54 seconds to Bella Williams. In the consolation semifinals, Hunt pinned Friends University’s Anisa Moreno in 44 seconds, then pinned Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa’s Miah Kenny in 3:49 to win third place.

As a team, the Lady Vikings crowned three individual champions — Calli Connally at 103 pounds, Abigail Butts at 110 and Gabby Watson at heavyweight.

Alexis Ahtone (138 pounds) and Jessina Smith (207) were runners- up, Laila Mirza (117), Margret Jordan (160) and Emily Foster (207) were third, Madison Roe (124), Chanelle Alburg (131), Alondra Valles (138) and Izzy Pack (180) were fourth, Emma Hall (110) and Grace Thompson (180) were fifth and Victoria Haggard (117), Kaylee Campbell (124), Olivia Sandoval (131) were sixth.

At the season-opening Friends University Falcon Open, which took place Nov. 1 in Wichita, Kan., Hunt did not place but three of five matches in which she competed. After losing her opening-round match to University of Saint Mary’s Skylur Lewis as she was pinned in 4:39, Hunt, who received a consolation first-round bye, won her next three consolation matches, all by pinfall, over Ottawa University’s Ingrid Beltran-Gonzaga (46 seconds), OCU’s Morgan Mackey (1:39) and Kenny, who she beat for third place in the CASC Lady Vikings Open (53 seconds). She lost in the fifth round of consolation to Doane College’s Payton Weese by pinfall in 2:56.

As a team, CASC crowned two champions — Samara Markwardt at 131 pounds and Watson at heavyweight.

Butts (110 pounds) was runner-up, Connally (103) and Mirza (117) were third, Sandoval (131) was fourth.

The Lady Vikings will return to action 6 p.m. next Saturday in a road dual against NOCTonkawa.
