Webbers Falls School Board appoints Mills as new superintedent
By AMIE CATO-REMER Editor

The Webbers Falls Board of Education has announced the hiring of Mike Mills as the district’s next superintendent, following the retirement of current Superintendent Chris Whelan. Mills will officially take over the role on July 1, 2025, after a unanimous decision made during the board’s regular monthly meeting on Dec. 9.

Mills, a 1989 graduate of Keota High School, brings with him a wealth of experience in education and a deep commitment to his community. A standout athlete in his youth, Mills was a member of the 1989 state tournament basketball team at Keota. His career in education began at Hilldale Public Schools, where he served as both a teacher and coach. During his time as an assistant coach, he played a pivotal role in helping Hilldale secure state championships in both baseball and softball.

After his time at Hilldale, Mills expanded his educational career at Wagoner Public Schools, working as a teacher, coach, and Alternative Education Director. He later served as high school principal at McCurtain Public Schools for two years before returning to Webbers Falls, where he has been the high school principal for the past several years.

In addition to his profes- sional accomplishments, Mills is a proud family man. He and his wife, Rebecca, have two grown children, Casady and Drew, and a granddaughter, Audrey. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling, spending time on the family farm, and cheering for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Mills expressed his enthusiasm for stepping into the superintendent role, stating, “I have a deep love for Webbers Falls’ school and community, and I am excited to serve in this new capacity. Webbers Falls School is rich in tradition, and I look forward to continuing that tradition.”

The Webbers Falls Board of Education expressed their confidence in Mills’ leadership, noting his dedication to the district, his strong ties to the community, and his proven track record in education.

The district will begin preparing for a smooth transition between Whelan, who is retiring, and Mills, who will assume full duties as superintendent next summer.
