Oklahoma’s Ever-Changing Weather

Oklahoma’s Ever-Changing Weather
By Pastor Tim Perkins First Southern Baptist Church, Gore

I’ve heard it said all my life, and have even said this many times myself, “If you don’t like the weather in Oklahoma wait a minute (or a day), and it will change. I believe we now have officially taken this to the extreme!

As I write this article, outside there is snow and ice. The temperature is a whopping 15 degrees with a wind chill of about 0 (actually it is +4). The wind is blowing the snow across the streets and fields. The sun is shining brightly but don’t be fooled…it’s freezing outside!

Then, just last week we were at almost 80 degrees. The sun was shining, a nice spring breeze was blowing. We all thought the groundhog got it wrong, and spring had arrived early. Seems like that silly rodent, Punxsutawney Phil, knew more about the weather than our weathermen.

And on top of all this, next week is another turnabout! It seems the weathermen are calling for sunshine, warmth and a return to early spring! As you are reading this article it should be in the upper 60s, and our lows will be in the 40s rather than single digits.

I just described two seasons in two weeks with two totally different extremes! Somebody make up their mind with this crazy weather. It is as if it’s spring, no wait, just kidding, it is still winter but only for another… I don’t know how the trees, flowers and shrubs know what to do. “Time to bud out and get ready for spring…no wait, cold’s back again. Maybe tomorrow…” Even the jonquils have failed to appear yet this year.

It has been crazy back and forth all year long it seems. Cold a week, warm a week, then back to the cold again. I guess it is easy to see why we have all been sick since the New Year started. Even the flu bug doesn’t know what to do.

Our poor kids are just as confused, too. One day warm, next day cold…how do I dress? Well you get a t-shirt and a hoodie, complimented with a pair of shorts, socks that go to the knees and a pair of Crocs! Sometimes they will even say they are cold but most times if they are, they won’t say anything for fear of an adult saying, “I told you so.”

Yes, this has certainly been a crazy winter. But as we say in Oklahoma, “It’s Oklahoma!”

But you know what I do like? God and His Word. God never changes and neither does His Word. Never. Since creation, God has never changed. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Malachi 3:6 says so, “I the Lord do not change.” James 1:17 says at the end of the verse,”…With whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” Then in Hebrews it says that Jesus is the same, “Yesterday, today and forever.”

God’s Word is the same. Here are a few verses to remind us of that very same thing, unchanging. Psalms 119:89, “Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the Heavens,” Isaiah 40:8, “The grass withers, the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever,” and 1 Peter 1:25, “But the Word of the Lord endures forever.” Another favorite verse is Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my Words will not pass away.”

It seems like there is not a lot that is predictable. Things seem to be ever changing, but God and His word never change. Regardless of the season, what month on the calendar it is or what T.V., news or weather pundits predict, God will stay the same.

When the world around us seems to be falling apart or crumbling, you can be assured that God and His Word will remain strong and in place. It is God’s nature. He simply cannot, has not and will not change…to suit our wants or desires, to make our life easier or more pleasant or to make life more convenient.

God is what He says He is, does what He says He will do, and goes the way He says He will go.

So let the weather change, and it will… this is Oklahoma. In the meantime I am going to keep depending on something (Someone) a little more certain, God.

Now, what am I going to wear tomorrow?

Bro. Tim
