Gore Pirates go 3-2 last week with losses to Central, Vian
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Gore Pirates baseball team went 3-2 last week, beating Porter Consolidated 12-0 on March 10 and defeating Moss 6-4 and Barnsdall 11-5 on Thursday in the Dewar Baseball Festival.

The two losses came to county rivals as a late rally lifted the Central Tigers to a 7-6 victory on March 11 at Central High School, while the Vian Wolverines beat the Pirates 10-7 on Saturday at the Dewar Baseball Festival.

In the win over Porter Consolidated, the Pirates (5-2) broke a scoreless tie with a 12-run fifth inning.

For the game, Gage Dame was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs batted in and a run scored, while Keiden Denton doubled with two RBIs and a run scored for Gore.

Tate Brooksher (2-0) threw a five-inning fourhitter with four strikeouts.

In the victory over Moss in a battle of Pirates in the Dewar Baseball Festival, Gore broke a 2-all tie with a four-run second inning to take a 6-2 lead after two innings. Moss scored twice in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 6-4 after four innings but got no closer.

For the game, James Brasuell (2-1) got the win, getting six strikeouts in five innings. Dame got the save, going the final inning with a strikeout.

In the win over Barnsdall in the Dewar Baseball Festival, the Pirates rallied from a 3-0 first-inning deficit with a single run in the first inning and five runs in the third inning to take the lead for good at 6-3 after three innings. After the Panthers cut their deficit to 6-5 in the fifth inning, the Pirates sealed the deal with a five-run fifth inning — with four of those runs coming on Brooksher’s grand-slam home run For the game, Brooksher was 2-for-3 with his first homer of the season, five RBIs and three runs scored, Dane Gates was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored and Kason Short doubled with two RBIs for Gore.

McKennon McElhaney (1-1) got his first win of the season, going the first 4.2 innings with two strikeouts. Dame got the final out of the game.

In Gore’s loss to Central, the Tigers scored three runs in the home half of the seventh inning to snatch the win away from the Pirates, who had scored three runs in the top of the frame to take a 6-4 lead.

In defeat, Brasuell was 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored, Dame was 2-for-4 and Brooksher doubled with an RBI and a run scored for Gore.

McElhaney took the loss in relief, going the final 2.1 innings with two strikeouts. Brasuell started and went the first 4.1 innings with six Ks.

In the loss to Vian in the Dewar Baseball Festival, the Wolverines rallied from a 6-1 second-inning deficit with a six-run second inning and a single run in the third inning to take an 8-6 lead. After the Pirates cut their deficit to 8-7 with a run in the fourth inning, the Wolverines got two big insurance runs in their half of the fourth inning.

In defeat, Brasuell doubled with four RBIs for Gore.

Brasuell suffered his first loss of the season, despite fanning four batters in three innings. Dame went the final 1.1 innings with a strikeout.

The Pirates, whose Monday home game with Porum was canceled, played a home game Tuesday against Cave Springs — which was scheduled to be a threeway with Cave Springs but the Hornets backed out. The Pirates will wrap up Spring Break Week with a 7 p.m. Thursday game against Dewey at Oklahoma City’s Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
