By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Gore Pirates baseball team ended the week by finishing third in the Roland Wood Bat Tournament, beating Hackett, Ark., 6-1 in Saturday afternoon’s third-place game after winning both pool-play games on Thursday — beatingKeys 5-2 and Roland 4-1.

The week started with a 16-6 home loss to Red Oak on March 24 and an 8-4 road loss to Wilburton on March 25.

In the win over Hackett, the Pirates (8-5) took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. After the Hornets scored their lone run in the fourth inning to cut their deficit to 3-1, the Pirates sealed the deal with a two-run fifth inning and a run in the sixth inning.

For the game, Gage Dame was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, Kyler McGee was 2-for-4 with a run batted in and Duane Hunt was 2-for-3 with a run batted in for Gore.

McKennon McElhaney (2-1) got the win, going the first five innings with three strikeouts. Keiden Denton went the final two innings.

In the victory over Keys, the Pirates, who trailed 1-0 after an inning, scored three runs in the second inning and once in the third inning for a 4-1 lead. After the Cougars scored in their half of the third inning to cut the deficit to 4-2, the Pirates scored a big insurance run in the fourth inning.

For the game, Dame was 2-for-3 with a double, a run batted in and a run scored, while Kason Short doubled with an RBI for Gore.

James Brasuell (3-2) got the win, going six innings with 10 strikeouts.

In the victory over Roland, the Pirates scored once in the first inning and twice in the third inning for a 3-0 lead. After the Rangers cut the deficit to 3-1 after three innings, the Pirates scored an insurance run in the fifth inning.

For the game, Tate Brooksher was 3-for-3 with three runs scored for Gore.

Brooksher (3-1) got the win, getting 13 strikeouts and throwing a one-hitter.

In the loss to Red Oak, the Eagles rallied from a 6-2 third-inning deficit with a pair of four-run innings in the fourth and sixth innings, then put the exclamation point on the come-from-behind win with a six-run seventh inning.

In defeat, Short was 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored, McGee was 2-for-4 and Keeton Rowe doubled and scored once for the Pirates.

Brasuell suffered the loss in relief, going the final 3.2 innings with three strikeouts. Brooksher started and went the first 3.1 innings with two strikeouts.

In the loss to Wilburton, the Pirates scored three runs in the third inning and once in the fourth inning for a 4-1 lead, only to see the Diggers score three runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning to snatch away the win.

In defeat, Dane Gates doubled and scored once, Dame doubled with a run batted in and Rowe tripled with an RBI and a run scored for Gore.

Denton (0-1) suffered the loss in relief, getting two strikeouts over the final 2.1 innings of the game. McElhaney got the start and went the first 3.1 innings. Dame got the second out of the fourth inning.
