Vian Wolverines go 4-0 last week; pitcher no-hits Stilwell

The Vian Wolverines baseball team went 4-0 last week.

The week began with an 8-3 road win over Prairie Grove, Ark., on April 14, then another road victory by the score of 9-1 in six innings over Talihina on April 15.

At the rain-shortened Checotah Tournament, the Wolverines knocked off the host Wildcats 11-5 on Thursday and defeated Stilwell 10-0 in three innings on Friday to make Saturday’s championship game. However, Saturday’s title game was rained out, and coach John Brockman is all but sure the contest will not be rescheduled.

In the win over Prairie Grove, the Wolverines (23-5) jumped out to an early advantage as a three-run first inning and a two-run third inning made it 5-0. After Prairie Grove cut its deficit to 5-2 after four innings, the Wolverines scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 7-2 advantage.

For the game, Riley Ellis was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, Drake Collins was 2-for-3 with a double, a run batted in and a run scored, Jeremiah Marshall doubled with an RBI and Kaden Fulbright tripled with three RBIs for Vian.

Chris Cheater (4-0) got the complete-game win, getting eight strike-outs and throwing a five-hitter.

In the victory over Talihina, after the Golden Tigers (12-8) took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, the Wolverines put the game into runrule status with a sixrun fourth inning and a three-run fifth inning.

For the contest, Draighton Fletcher was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Michael Polecat was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and a run scored and Cheater was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI for Vian.

Manny Terrill (4-0) got the complete-game victory as he struck out two batters and scattered seven hits.

In the tournament win over Checotah, the Wolverines rallied from a 5-1, third-inning deficit with a four-run fifth inning to tie the game at 5-all, then added two runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh inning to complete the come-from-behind win.

For the game, Ellis was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, Fletcher was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored and Cheater was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored for Vian.

Polecat (6-2) got the win in relief, going the final five innings with five strikeouts. Fulbright got the start and went the first two innings with two strikeouts.

In the tournament victory over Stilwell, the Wolverines broke the scoreless tie with a 10run third inning to put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Cash Collins was 3-for-3 with a double, four RBIs and a run scored, while Ellis was 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Vian.

Ellis (4-0) got the win as he pitched a threeinning no-hitter with seven strikeouts.
