Vian Wolverines end week with 20th straight victory

The Vian Wolverines ended last week with their 20th straight victory as they got a 5-1 come-from-behind victory over the Hulbert Riders on Saturday afternoon at home.

Last week started with a 9-0 five-inning home victory over Porter on April 21, then got a 7-1 road victory over Hartshorne on April 22.

On Thursday, the Wolverines defeated Cameron 4-1 at home, which was followed by a road 5-2 victory over Wilburton.

The last loss suffered prior to any of this week’s action came March 22 in a 15-7 loss to Hammon in the Ripley Tournament, which came at the end of Spring Break.

In the win over Porter, pitcher Chris Cheater threw a five-inning onehitter as Cheater (6-0) struck out five batters in five innings.

The Wolverines (28-5) got Cheater all the runs needed with a four-run first inning for a 4-0 lead. The Wolverines then added two runs in the second inning and three runs in the third inning for a 9-0 lead to put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Michael Polecat was 3-for-3 with a double, three runs batted in and two runs scored, Draighton Fletcher was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs and Riley Ellis hit his third home run of the season with two RBIs for Vian.

In the victory over Hartshorne, after falling behind 1-0 after an inning, the Wolverines tied the game with a run in the fourth inning and capped the come-frombehind victory with a six-run sixth inning.

For the game, Cash Collins was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored, Jeremiah Marshall doubled with two runs batted in and a run scored, Stryker Fields doubled with an RBI and Ellis hit his fourth home run of the season with four RBIs for Vian.

Manny Terrill (5-0) got the complete-game win, getting six strikeouts in seven innings and throwing a threehitter.

In Thursday’s win over Cameron, the Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 lead. After the Yellowjackets cut their deficit to 3-1 after two innings, the Wolverines got that run back in the sixth inning.

For the game, Polecat was 2-for-4, Cash Collins was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Drake Collins was 2-for-3 for Vian.

Polecat (7-2) got the complete-game victory, striking out three batters in seven innings and throwing a three-hitter.

In Friday’s victory over Wilburton, after the Diggers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, the Wolverines took the lead for good with a threerun third inning for a 3-1 lead. After the Diggers cut their deficit to 3-2 after four innings, the Wolverines scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to get the win.

For the game, Polecat was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored, while Cash Collins singled for the only hits for Vian.

Ellis (5-0) got the win, going the first four innings with seven strikeouts. Cheater got his second save of the season. going the final three innings with three Ks. The duo combined to one-hit the Diggers.

In Saturday afternoon’s win over Hulbert, the Wolverines fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Wolverines got their second comeback victory of the week by scoring once in the first inning to tie the game, then scoring single runs win the fourth and fifth innings and capped the come-from-behind win with a two-run sixth inning.

For the game, Cash Collins tripled with an RBI and a run scored, Marshall doubled with an RBI and a run scored and Fletcher singled and scored once for Vian.

Cheater got the win in relief, going the final 6.2 innings with six strikeouts. Kaden Fulbright got the start but only lasted two-thirds of an inning.

The Wolverines will begin the postseason this week by playing in the Class 2A Regional Tournament, likely at home. However, the matchups and times were not yet determined at press time.
