Vian Wolverines tame Atoka Wampus Cats, travel to Henryetta on Thursday
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Vian Wolverines made it a happy homecoming with a 49-14 rout of the Atoka Wampus Cats in a District 2AII-4 game Friday night at St. John Stadium.

The Wolverines (5-1 overall, 3-0 in district play) won for the fourth straight week, and they wasted little time in taking control of the game.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter as Masyn Wright scored on the opening kickoff, taking it back 70 yards for the score. Cash Trammel’s extra point made it 7-0 with just 14 seconds elapsed into the game.

Wright then scored on Vian’s first offensive possession of the contest as he took it in from 11 yards out. Trammel’s PAT doubled the lead to 14-0 with 9:57 remaining in the first quarter.

After stopping the Wampus Cats (1-5, 1-2) on their next possession, Vian’s special teams struck once again as Adoff Stahl returned the punt 56 yards for the touchdown. Trammel’s extra point increased Vian’s advantage to 21-0 with 8:26 left in the period.

Vian’s fourth score of the opening quarter came on Trammel’s 52yard TD pass to Ledger Folsom with 1:41 remaining in the period. Trammel’s fourth PAT of the quarter put the Wolverines ahead 28-0 after a period.

In the second quarter, the Wolverines scored three touchdowns for a 49-0 halftime lead.

The first secondperiod TD was a 29yard touchdown run by Draighton Fletcher. Trammel’s extra point made it 35-0 with 11:51 left before halftime.

Trammel connected with Folsom once again, this time on a 21-yard TD pass. Vian’s lead was at 42-0 with 7:46 remaining in the first half after Trammel’s sixth PAT of the first half.

The Wolverines got two hat tricks on the same play as Trammel threw his third touchdown pass and Wright scored his second TD as the two connected on a 46-yard TD pass on the final play of the first half. Trammel’s extra point put Vian ahead 49-0 at halftime.

The Wampus Cats scored two third-quarter TDs to avoid the shutout.

For the game, Trammel threw for 122 yards and three touchdowns and hit seven PATs.

Wright, who intercepted a pass, rushed for 31 yards on six carries and scored three TDs, one of which was on the opening kickoff.

Fletcher led Vian in rushing with 97 yards and a touchdown.

Folsom was the leading receiver for the Wolverines as he caught two TD passes totaling 73 yards, while Wright caught three passes for 49 yards and two touchdowns.

The Wolverines will return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday as they will travel to face the Henryetta Knights (4-2, 2-1), who suffered their first district loss Friday night as they fell 32-0 to Valliant.

When the Knights visited the Wolverines last season at St. John Stadium, the Knights gave the Wolverines a first-half scare as Henryetta was on the move late in the second quarter to possibly cut its deficit to 16-14 or 16-12.

However, two big plays for the Wolverines saved the day. In a 41-second span, the Wolverines, who had just fumbled the ball away to the Knights, Wright picked off Henryetta quarterback Brady Norman’s pass and returned it 68 yards to the Henryetta 13 with nine seconds left before halftime.

On the very next play, Trammel connected with Tyson Murphy on a 13-yard touchdown pass with a second left on the clock. Mendoza’s extra point put Vian ahead 23-6 at halftime en route to a 43-14 victory.
