The Vian Police Department has recognized local resident Kevin Chew for his courage and selflessness during a recent emergency.
According to Vian Police Chief Mark Harkins, on Sept. 28, a medical emergency occurred at the intersection of Hwys. 82 and 64. While on the scene, Kevin Chew and his brother, off-duty Sallisaw Police officer Anthony Chew, witnessed the situation unfolding and immediately took action to assist.
“Kevin and Anthony assisted with the individual and law enforcement in a way that can only be described as jaw-dropping,” Harkins said. “Kevin’s selfless actions of putting himself in harm’s way and maintaining calm during a volatile incident show an unwavering courage, that those who know Kevin, recognize as a part of who he is.”
Chief Harkins praised Kevin for being “a Vian resident this community can count on, trust, and be confident that when the need arises, he will be the first to be there for them.”
Harkins also commended Officer Anthony Chew for demonstrating “flawless training and a duty to service that Sallisaw residents can trust and count on.”
The department expressed gratitude to both men for their quick thinking and dedication to helping others, calling their actions a true reflection of service, courage and community spirit.
