Vian Wolverines claw Keys Cougars in playoff opener, will face Dibble in state quarterfinals
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Vian Wolverines got their march toward a second straight Class 2A, Division II state championship game off on the right set of paws as the Wolverines clawed the Keys Cougars 60-14 last Friday night at St. John Stadium in the opening round of the Class 2A, Division II playoffs.

The Wolverines (101), winners of nine straight, will entertain the Dibble Demons (92), who upset the Hennessey Eagles 57-41 last Friday night in Heavener, in the state quarterfinals at 7 p.m. this Friday at St. John Stadium.

One of the Demons’ wins this season came over the defending Class 2A, Division II state champion Davis Wolves as Dibble beat Davis 2827 in overtime at home in the District 2AII-2 opener on Sept. 26.

The Wolves beat the Wolverines 28-18 on Dec. 7 in the Class 2A, Division II state championship game at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.

The Dibble-Vian state quarterfinal game winner will meet the Salina-Davis state quarterfinal game winner at 1 p.m. Dec. 5 at a neutral site in the state semifinals.

The Wolverines took a 7-0 lead on Cash Trammel’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Ledger Folsom. Trammel’s extra point put Vian ahead 7-0 with 10:31 left in the first quarter.

On Vian’s next possession, Masyn Wright scored the first of his three touchdowns on the night as he scored on a 6-yard run. Trammel’s PAT increased Vian’s advantage to 14-0 with 7:32 remaining in the period. The Wolverines took a 14-7 lead into the second quarter.

The second period was where the Wolverines took full control of the game as Masyn Wright scored on a 24yard TD run and caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Trammel.

Draighton Fletcher scored his first of two TDs on a 27-yard run, while Trammel connected once more with Folsom for the fourth touchdown in the period, a 70-yarder. Trammel hit all four extra points to help Vian to a 42-14 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Fletcher scored his second touchdown on an 8-yard run. While Trammel’s PAT missed the mark, Vian was still comfortably ahead at 48-14 with 8:27 left in the period.

For most of the second half, Vian’s reserves saw action, and produced points.

Trammel connected with Amos Wright on a 19-yard TD pass with 1:27 remaining in the quarter. Trammel once again missed the extra point, but Vian took a 54-14 advantage into the final period.

The final score of the game also was produced by Vian’s reserves as Carter Madsen connected with Chris Cheater on a 7-yard touchdown pass with exactly six minutes left in the game.

For the contest, Trammel threw for 132 yards and two TDs, Masyn Wright rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 15 yards and a third TD and Fletcher had 167 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns. Wright also had an interception.
