Webbers Falls teams split opening-week games; new Lady Warriors coach wins debut

The Webbers Falls High School basketball teams each split their opening-week games to begin the new season.

New Webbers Falls girls coach Staci Simeroth won her debut as the Lady Warriors won their Riverside Conference road opener 46-42 over Arkoma on Dec. 2 at Arkoma’s Neil Brannon Gymnasium.

However, the Lady Warriors lost their home opener 55-32 to conference rival Okay last Friday at Webbers Falls Event Center.

The same was the case for the Warriors, who won their season opener 49-36 on Dec. 2 at conference rival Arkoma but lost last Friday night’s home opener 9027 to Riverside Conference rival Okay last Friday night.

In the girls’ win over Arkoma, the Lady Warriors (1-1) jumped out to an 18-7 lead after a quarter, only to see the Lady Mustangs trim their deficit to 25-17 at halftime.

With Webbers Falls leading 34-26 after three quarters, Arkoma tried to mount a fourthquarter rally as the Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Warriors 15-12 in the final period, but the Lady Warriors survived the scare.

Allie Patterson scored a game-high 27 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Madison Smith with 11 points, Audri Spears and Abbie Patterson with three points each and Hailey Shanks with two points.

In the girls’ loss to Okay, the Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 20-9 lead after a period en route to a 34-21 halftime advantage and a 43-27 lead after three quarters.

In defeat, Allie Patterson scored 17 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Abbie Patterson with four points, Katie Frazier and Audri Spears with three points, Peyton Shanks and Paizley Turley with two points each and Madison Smith with a free throw.

In the boys’ victory over Arkoma, the Warriors (1-1) led 8-5 after a quarter but used a 12-2 second period to take a 20-7 halftime lead, which became a 37-22 advantage after three periods.

For the game, Brutus Robinson scored a game-high 16 points and Gunner Shelby added 10 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Eli Hefflin and Thadan Yandell with nine points each, Chevy Cole and Cordae Shine each with two points and Cason Newcomer with a free throw.

In the boys’ loss to Okay, the Mustangs corralled the Warriors 23-3 in the opening quarter en route to a 41-12 halftime advantage and a 66-22 lead going into the final period.

In defeat, Shelby and Yandell each scored eight points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Cole with seven points and Newcomer and Hefflin with two points apiece.
