Gore basketball teams sweep Riverside Conference games from Webbers Falls

The Gore High School basketball teams swept a pair of Riverside Conference games from their Arkansas River rivals from Webbers Falls on Thursday night at Webbers Falls Event Center.

The Lady Pirates beat their former coach Staci Simeroth and the Lady Warriors 53-34, then the Pirates completed the sweep with a 67-51 victory over the Warriors.

In between games, former Webbers Falls basketball coach Jerry Ward was honored by having the basketball floor be named “Coach Jerry Ward Court.”

In the Gore girls’ win over Webbers Falls, the Lady Pirates (4-3), winners of three straight, jumped out to a 25-8 lead after a period en route to a 33-18 halftime advantage and a 46-24 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Gore put a trio of players into double figures, led by River Shoemake with 13 points, followed by Kennedy Williams with 11 points and Emily Daily with 10 points. Gracie Bruce had eight points, followed by Rayleigh Moore with seven points and Sophie O’Connor with four points.

In defeat, Allie Patterson scored a gamehigh 18 points to lead the Lady Warriors (34), followed by Bailey Ward with five points, Katie Frazier with four points, Peyton Shanks, Abbie Patterson and Paizley Turley with two points each and Audri Spears with a free throw.

In the Gore boys’ victory over Webbers Falls, the Pirates (5-3) took an 18-11 lead after a quarter, but the Warriors (3-5) trimmed their deficit to 32-27 at halftime. The Pirates put away the game with an 18-7 third quarter to give them a 50-34 lead going into the final period.

For the game, Cain Cooper scored a gamehigh 27 points to lead Gore, followed by Tate Brooksher with 14 points, Eli Munson with 12 points and Gabe Hefley with 11 points. Cruz Ward added three points for the Pirates.

In defeat, Thadan Yandell scored 17 points and Brutus Robinson added 13 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Cason Newcomer with eight points, Gunner Shelby with six points, Chevy Cole with four points and Eli Hefflin with three points.

Both schools’ squads had games earlier in the week.

The Gore teams swept a pair of road Riverside Conference games from Arkoma on Dec. 16 at Arkoma’s Neil Brannon Gymnasium as the Lady Pirates started the night with a 53-23 win over the Lady Mustangs, then the Pirates defeated the Mustangs 53-38.

In the Gore girls’ win over Arkoma, the Lady Pirates took care of their Riverside Conference opponent fairly quickly, taking a 12-2 lead after a quarter en route to a 24-11 halftime advantage and a 40-21 lead after three periods.

For the game, Gore put a trio of players into double figures, led by Daily and Williams sharing gamehigh honors with 14 points each, while Moore added 11 points. O’Connor scored eight points, while Shoemake and Kylie “K.J.” McEver scored three points apiece.

In the Gore boys’ win over Arkoma, the Pirates used a strong second quarter to take care of their Riverside Conference counterparts.

Leading 12-10 after a quarter, the Pirates doubled the Mustangs 24-12 in the second period to take a 36-22 advantage at halftime, which became a 43-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

For the game, Gore put a trio of players into double figures, led by Brooksher’s game-high 18 points, followed by Cooper’s 17 points and Munson’s 12 points. Keeton Rowe scored four points, while Hefley added two points.

The Webbers Falls squads split their Dec. 16 road games at Braggs, with the Lady Warriors winning 53-12 but the Warriors falling 66-52.

In the Webbers Falls girls’ win over Braggs, the Lady Warriors jumped out to a 24-1 lead after a quarter and were never headed.

For the game, Madison Smith scored a game-high 13 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Allie Patterson with seven points, Rhilee Jones and Peyton Shanks with six points each, Frazier and Spears each with five points, Turley, Hailey Shanks and Abbie Patterson with four points each and River Qualls with a free throw.

In the Webbers Falls boys’ loss to Braggs, the Wildcats jumped out to a 15-4 lead after a quarter, which became a 3020 halftime advantage and a 52-30 lead after three periods.

In defeat, Yandell led all scorers with a gamehigh 25 points to lead the Warriors, followed by Robinson with nine points, Cole with eight points, Hefflin with six points and Newcomer with four points.
