Vian wrestlers ready to get on the mat this season
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Vian High School wrestlers are ready to get the season started, which began Dec. 16 at home with action against Wagoner — and junior high action with both Muldrow and Wagoner.

The Wolverines return six wrestlers from a season ago, including Class 3A State Tournament heavyweight wrestler Garritt Hunt.

Also back for the Wolverines are Charles Lucas (113 pounds), Adoff Stahl (138), Jace Huff (190), Isaac Mazzerelli (190) and Tyson Murphy (215).

Rounding out the roster are Dradyn Harrison at 106 pounds, Calvin Andrade at 126, Jacob Buttery at 132, Noah Hallmark at 138, Carter Madsen at 150, Billy Oliver at 165 and Axel Branham, Jonah Briley and Justice Conpean at 175. The Lady Wolverines return three of the four wrestlers who competed a season ago — 115-pounder Maddison Turman, 125-pounder Carmen Rautenberg and 150-pounder Aubrey Gant.

While the fourth member of last year’s Lady Wolverines squad, Kye Barnes, transferred to Sallisaw, two new faces are out for this season as 110-pounder Leila Cheater and 130-pounder Sidney Cox round out the roster. Cheater and Cox were members of last fall’s fast-pitch softball team.

The Wolverines won their Thursday night road dual over Warner. While the actual dual tied at 36-all, due to getting more pinfalls, the Wolverines got the win.

Harrison (106 pounds), Lucas (106), Adoff Stahl (138), Huff (190) and Hunt (heavyweight) all won their matches.

For the Lady Wolverines, Turman (115 pounds) and Gant (150) each won their matches Thursday night.

The Vian wrestlers were slated to participate in the Sequoyah-Tahlequah Tournament, which took place last Friday and Saturday. Look for the information on the tournament in next week’s edition.
