Vian wrestlers do well at Tulsa Hale Tournament after wrestling Poteau on Thursday

It was a successful weekend for the Vian high school and junior high wrestlers at the Tulsa Hale Tournament, which took place Friday for high school wrestlers and Saturday for junior high wrestlers.

On Friday, eight high school wrestlers placed, including two champions — Adoff Stahl at 138 pounds and Garritt Hunt at heavyweight.

Leila Cheater (110 pounds) and Aubrey Gant (115) were runnersup, Axl Branham (175), Dradyn Harrison (106) and Sidney Cox (130) were third and Jace Huff was fourth at 175 pounds.

On Saturday, the Vian junior high wrestling team saw 13 members place, with six champions.

C laiming gold medals were Joely Hunt (102 pounds), Brinlee Wooten (110), Jestin Rosson (80), Dax Stewart (92), Lex Branham (170) and Joseph Dean (heavyweight).

Bronc Sumpter (106 pounds), Haydin Annesley (195) and Brently Smith (126) came in second, Cale Winans (92) and Marco Gonzalez (170) were third and Cain Winans (119) and Gage Gilbreath (106) were fourth.

The sixth-seventh grade boys were the team champions with 102 points, while the eighth-ninth grade girls were runners-up in the team standings.

Last Thursday night, the Wolverines lost their road dual 50-34 to the host Poteau Pirates at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse to fall to 0-3 in duals this season.

The Lady Wolverines (1-1) fell 48-30 to the Lady Pirates to suffer their first dual loss of the season.

There was no more information reported on either dual by press time.

The Wolverines will return to action in the District 3A-6 Duals beginning at noon Thursday at Vinita, along with Gore, Roland, Berryhill, Checotah, Heavener and Wilburton. The team with the best win-loss record on the day will be the district champion and represent the district at the Class 3A Dual State Tournament, which will be Feb. 13-14.
