Vian Wolverines baseball team goes 2-1 on opening week
By David Seeley Sports Editor

It was a fairly successful start to the 2026 baseball season for the Vian Wolverines last week as they went 2-1, winning both home games — taking the season and home opener 18-1 in five innings on March 3 before blanking Heavener 8-0 last Friday afternoon at home. They ended the week with a 3-1 road loss to the Sallisaw Black Diamonds on a chilly afternoon last Saturday at Sallisaw High School’s “Turf of Dreams.”

In the rout of Westville, the Wolverines jumped out to a 5-0 lead after an inning. After the Yellowjackets scored their lone run in the second inning, the Wolverines put the game into run-rule status with a three-run second inning, a four-run third inning and a six-run fourth inning.

For the contest, Zayden Cheater went 2-for-2 with a double, four runs scored and two runs batted in, Chris Cheater went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored and Riley Ellis doubled with three runs scored and an RBI for Vian.

Michael Polecat (1-0) got the complete-game, five-inning victory as he threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

In the win over Heavener, Chris Cheater and Clayton Thomas combined to throw a five-inning, two-hitter. Cheater (1-0) got the win, going the first four innings with four strikeouts. Clayton pitched the fifth inning, striking out two batters.

The Wolverines scored once in the first inning, twice in the second inning and three runs in the third inning for a 6-0 lead. A two-run fifth inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Draighton Fletcher was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Adoff Stahl doubled with two RBIs and a run scored for Vian.

In Saturday’s loss to Sallisaw, the Black Diamonds broke a 1-all tie with a two-run fifth inning.

Sallisaw’s pitching duo of starter Keaton Brant and reliever Carson Sharp combined to four-hit the Wolverines as Chris Cheater was 2-for-2, while Stahl and Manny Terrill each singled for Vian.

Terrill (0-1) suffered the loss, going the first 4.2 innings with three strikeouts. Thomas went the rest of the way with a strikeout.
