Season ends for former Lady Wolverine’s EOSC softball team
By David Seeley Sports Editor,

PIEDMONT — The 2024 softball season came to an end for former Vian Lady Wolverine Greenlee Wells and her Eastern Oklahoma State College Lady Mountaineers on Sunday as they lost 7-2 to the Connors State College Cowgirls in the winner-take-all Region II Tournament final.

The Lady Mountaineers, who ended the season at 36-19, forced the if-game with an 8-7 victory on Saturday.

The Lady Mountaineers opened the tournament last Wednesday with a 10-2 six-inning win over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa, but lost a heartbreaking 6-5 contest to the Cowgirls on Thursday.

However, EOSC responded with three straight wins to reach the championship game — posting a 6-5 nine-inning victory over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Thursday afternoon’s loser’s-bracket quarterfinals, an 8-5 win over Rose State College in Friday’s loser’s-bracket semifinal and an 8-3 victory over Seminole State College in Friday’s loser’s- bracket final.

In the winner-takeall game, the Cowgirls fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, but they scored three runs in the third inning and four runs in the sixth inning for a 7-1 lead.

In defeat, Wells doubled in three at-bats.

In the first championship game, Hailey Vela’s two-out, walk-off RBI single broke a 7-all tie in the home half of the seventh inning as the Lady Mountaineers forced the if-game.

For the contest, Wells was 2-for-4 with a solo home run, her singleseason record 26th homer of the season, to tie the game at 7-all in the sixth inning. She scored twice.

In the tournamentopening win over NOCTonkawa, the Lady Mountaineers never trailed, taking a 3-0 lead in the opening inning, then putting the game into run-rule status with a two-run sixth inning.

For the game, Wells was hitless in one official at-bat but scored twice.

In the first loss to Connors State, the Lady Mountaineers fell behind 4-0 after three innings, then cut the deficit twice to two runs — the last time was at 6-4 in the sixth inning — before scoring once in the seventh inning on a solo homer by Wells to cut the Connors State lead to 6-5. However, the rally came up short.

In defeat, Wells was 1-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs scored.

In the victory over NEO, a sacrifice fly by Alexis Helzer in the bottom of the ninth scored Wells to walk off the Lady Norse, and keep the Lady Mountaineers alive in the tournament.

For the game, Wells was 2-for-4 with a double and scored the game-winning run.

In the win over Rose State, EOSC broke a 5-all tie with a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Wells, who was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and a run scored.

In the victory over Seminole State, the Lady Mountaineers broke a 3-all tie with a three-run sixth inning and a tworun seventh inning.

For the game, Wells singled in four at-bats.

In 54 games this season, Wells batted .446 with 16 doubles, a single- season record 26 homers, 74 runs batted in and 57 runs scored.

She will play her next two college softball seasons for the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison in Shawnee.
