Vian Lady Wolverines go 1-4 during opening week of season
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The 2024 fast-pitch season got off to a rough start for the Vian Lady Wolverines as they went 1-4.

The lone win last week was a 10-1 victory over Salina on Friday in the Muldrow Softball Festival, which saw Day 2 action on Saturday rained out.

The season began with a 12-1 home district loss to Eufaula on Aug. 13 at Armstrong Park.

The Lady Wolverines then lost both games in the Big 8 Conference Softball Festival on Thursday at Armstrong Park, losing 11-10 to Keys and 7-4 to Westville.

After Vian defeated Salina, the Lady Wolverines were edged 5-4 by Central in the Muldrow Festival.

In the victory over Salina, the Lady Wolverines picked up their first victory of the new fastpitch softball season.

The Lady Wolverines struck for four runs in the opening inning and never looked back, adding two runs in the third for a 6-0 advantage. A four-run fifth inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the game, Kala Gibbins was 3-for-4 with a run batted in and a run scored, Rayleigh Terrill was 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored, Hanna Mattingly was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, Tina Rautenberg was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, Lakoeta Cheater doubled with an RBI and a run scored and Rebel Simon doubled and scored once for Vian.

Gibbins (1-4) got the win, throwing a fiveinning two-hitter with three strikeouts.

In the loss to Eufaula, the Lady Ironheads took control of the season opener between the two teams early.

Eufaula scored once in the first inning, four runs in the second inning, three runs in the third inning and once in the fourth inning for a 9-0 lead.

The lone run for the Lady Wolverines (0-1 in district play entering this week’s district slate of games) came in the sixth inning on a twoout, RBI double by Gibbins.

In defeat, Gibbins hit an RBI double, while Eden Gilbert singled for Vian. Gibbins took the loss, despite fanning seven batters.

In the loss to Keys in the Big 8 Conference Softball Festival, the Lady Cougars broke a 5-all tie with a six-run sixth inning to put them ahead 11-6.

The Lady Wolverines would not go away without a fight as they scored twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh inning to cut their deficit to 11-10 but the rally ended there.

In defeat, Eden Girty was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in, Gibbins was 2-for-4 with with a double and two runs scored, Halli Russell was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored and Scarlett Fields hit a solo home run for Vian.

In the loss to Westville in the Big 8 Conference Festival, a threerun third inning put the Lady Wolverines ahead 4-1, but the Lady Yellowjackets stung them for seven runs over the final three innings — a two-run fifth inning, a three-run sixth inning and a single run in the seventh inning.
