Vian Wolverines, Lady Wolverines suffer through winless week

It was a rough week of hoops for the Vian High School basketball teams as they both went winless last week.

The Wolverines suffered a 59-20 loss to the Spiro Bulldogs on Feb. 4 at B.J. Traw Gymnasium before losing a pair of road Big 8 Conference games — a 45-36 loss to Westville on Thursday night and an 82-43 loss to Keys on Friday.

The Lady Wolverines fell 51-36 to Spiro at home Feb. 4, then lost their two conference road games — losing 59-41 to Westville on Thursday and 61-31 to Keys on Friday.

In the boys’ loss to Spiro, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-6 lead after a quarter en route to a 27-9 halftime advantage and a 40-17 lead going into the final period.

In defeat, Cash Trammel led the Wolverines (8-11) with six points, followed by Trace Sanders with five points, Michael Polecat with three points and Dante Glass, Jacob Brannick and Caden Brannick with two points apiece.

In the boys’ loss to Westville, the Yellowjackets flew out to a 12-8 lead after a quarter, but the Wolverines (1-6 in Big 8 Conference play cut their deficit to 24-23 at the half. However, the ’Jackets stung the Wolverines with a 12-5 third quarter to take a 36-28 lead going into the final period.

In defeat, Sanders tied for game-high honors with 15 points to lead Vian, followed by Jacob Brannick with six points, Caden Brannick with four points, Trammel, Polecat and Kyle King with three points each and Glass with two points.

In the boys’ loss to Keys, the Cougars jumped out to a 19-9 lead after a period, which became a 36-22 halftime advantage and a 55-35 lead going into the fourth quarter.

In defeat, Trammel scored 14 points and Caden Brannick added 10 points to lead Vian, followed by Sanders and Polecat with five points each and Glass, Jeremiah Marshall and Rylan Lane with three points apiece.

In the girls’ loss to Spiro, the Lady Bulldogs got put to an 18-5 lead to take control of the game.

In defeat, Rayleigh Terrill scored 10 points to lead the Lady Wolverines (4-18), followed by Shelbie Glass with eight points, Avery Wright with seven points, Rebel Simon, Kala Gibbins and Halli Russell with three points each and Eden Girty with two points.

In the girls’ loss to Westville, the Lady Yellowjackets led 10-6 after a quarter, 22-17 at the half and 40-25 going into the final period.

In defeat, Russell scored 13 points and Wright added 11 points to lead the Lady Wolverines (0-7 in Big 8 Conference play), followed by Glass with six points, Simon with five points, Terrill and Blazi Dieter with two points each and Girty and La-Koeta Cheater with a free throw apiece.

In the girls’ loss to Keys, the Lady Cougars clawed their way to an 11-2 lead after the opening period, but then used a 20-3 second quarter to up the advantage to 31-5 at halftime.

In defeat, Russell led Vian with 13 points, followed by Glass with five points, Simon and Girty with three points each, Gibbins and Cheater each with two points and Emry Smith with a free throw.
