Vian Wolverines baseball team enjoys perfect week
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Vian Wolverines baseball team enjoyed a perfect 5-0 week last week on the diamond.

The week started with a 6-0 home win over Central on March 10, then got two straight road victories — 11-1 over Pocola on March 11 and 17-13 over Wagoner on Thursday.

The Wolverines won both games played in the Dewar Baseball Festival, beating Barnsdall 11-0 and Gore 10-7 on Saturday. All Friday action at the Dewar Baseball Festival was canceled due to the windy weather conditions.

In the win over Central, Vian pitcher Michael Polecat threw a four-hitter as the Wolverines blanked the Tigers. Polecat (2-1) recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings.

The Wolverines (6-3) scored once in the first inning and broke open the game with five-run sixth inning.

For the contest, Chris Cheater doubled with a run batted in, Riley Ellis doubled and Drake Collins hit a sixth-inning, three-run triple and scored once in the fiverun rally for Vian.

In the victory over Pocola, the Wolverines got a combined four-hitter from Manny Terrill and Clayton Thomas.

Terrill (2-0) pitched the first four innings with four strikeouts to get the win, then Thomas pitched the fifth and final inning with a strikeout.

The Wolverines scored twice in the first inning and once in the third inning for a 3-0 lead. After the Indians scored once in the third inning to cut their deficit to 3-1, the Wolverines scored five runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning to put the game into run-rule status.

For the game, Draighton Fletcher was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Polecat doubled with three runs scored and an RBI, Terrill doubled with an RBI and Riley Ellis doubled with three runs scored and an RBI for Vian.

In Thursday’s road win over Wagoner, the Wolverines broke a 9-all tie after three innings with a seven-run fourth inning and a single run in the fifth inning to take a 17-9 lead in the fifth inning.

For the game, Fletcher was 3-for-5 with a double, his first home run of the season, four RBIs and three runs scored, Terrill was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Polecat doubled with three RBIs and three runs scored and Ellis doubled with two RBIs for Vian.

Thomas (1-0) got his first win of the season in relief, pitching 1.2 innings. Kaden Fulbright started, and only got two outs in the opening inning — one of which was by strikeout. Cheater got the next three outs, one of which was by strikeout. Jeremiah Marshall went the next 1.1 innings after Thomas and recorded a strikeout. Fletcher went the final 2.1 innings.

In the victory over Barnsdall in the Dewar Baseball Festival, Polecat threw a six-inning five-hitter with nine strikeouts.

The Wolverines broke a scoreless tie with a two-run third inning and a four-run fourth inning for a 6-0 lead. A five-run sixth inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Ellis was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored, Marshall was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Fletcher tripled with three RBIs and three runs scored for Vian.

In the win over Gore in the Dewar Baseball Festival, the Wolverines rallied from a 6-1 second-inning deficit with a six-run second inning and a single run in the third inning to take an 8-6 lead. After the Pirates cut their deficit to 8-7 with a run in the fourth inning, the Wolverines got two big insurance runs in their half of the fourth inning.
