Webbers Falls teams fall to Crowder in district title games
By David Seeley Sports Editor

It was not the start to the Class B, Division I playoffs the Webbers Falls teams had hoped for as they each fell to the host Crowder squads in the district tournament title games Friday night in Crowder.

The Lady Warriors lost 57-16 to the Demonettes, while the Warriors fell 52-46 to the Demons.

The Lady Warriors (7-15) and the Warriors (9-14) will be facing elimination throughout the remainder of the postseason, but they will get to play in the Class B, Division I Regional Tournament consolation quarterfinals on Thursday night on Coach Jerry Ward Court at Webbers Falls Arena. The Lady Warriors will meet South Coffeyville at 6 p.m., followed by the Warriors meeting Welch at 7:30 p.m.

The Webbers Falls teams must win Thursday night at home and Friday and Saturday afternoons at Varnum High School near Seminole to advance to next week’s area tournament at Prague.

In the girls’ loss to Crowder in the district title game, the Demonettes jumped out to a 15-1 lead after a period to take control of the game.

In defeat, Paizley Turley led Webbers Falls with five points, Peyton Shanks with four points, Abbie Patterson with three points and Allie Patterson and Hailey Shanks with two points apiece.

In the boys’ loss to Crowder in the district championship game, the Demons broke a 13-all tie after a quarter by outscoring the Warriors 39-33 over the final three quarters to get the district title.

In defeat, Thadan Yandell scored a gamehigh 19 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Gunner Shelby with nine points, Cason Newcomer and Brutus Robinson with six points apiece, Chevy Cole with four points and Eli Hefflin with two points.

To end the regular season, the Webbers Falls squads swept road games against the Watts teams on Feb. 9, with the Lady Warriors beating the Lady Engineers 55-32 and the Warriors prevailing 51-41.

In the girls’ win over Watts, the Lady Warriors snapped a sixgame losing streak with the win.

The Lady Warriors jumped out to a 19-9 lead after a quarter and never relinquished their advantage.

For the game, Allie Patterson scored a game-high 33 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Katie Frazier with seven points, Hailey Shanks with five points, Turley and Hannah Kay Mason with three points and Peyton Shanks and Abbie Patterson with two points apiece.

In the boys’ victory over Watts, the Warriors led 14-11 after a period and 24-21 at halftime, then used a 21-7 third quarter to take a 45-28 lead into the final period.

For the game, Cole scored a game-high 17 points and Yandell added 14 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Hefflin and Robinson with eight points and Shelby and Newcomer with two points apiece.
