Webbers Falls basketball teams see seasons end
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The basketball seasons came to an end for both Webbers Falls teams at the Class B, Division I Regional Tournament this past weekend, which took place Thursday on Coach Jerry Ward Court at Webbers Falls Event Center and Friday at Varnum High School near Seminole.

The Warriors staved off elimination on their home court Thursday night as they beat the Welch Wildcats 48-39 in the regional consolation quarterfinals, but they saw their season end with a 68-50 loss to the Union City Tigers in the Friday afternoon in the regional consolation semifinals at Varnum High School.

The Warriors ended the season at 10-15.

The Lady Warriors ended up losing their final game of the season on their home court as they were eliminated 51-40 by the South Coffeyville Lady Lions in the regional consolation quarterfinals.

The Lady Warriors finished the season at 7-16.

In the boys’ win over Welch, the Warriors led 14-12 after a quarter, which became a 28-16 halftime advantage and a 38-31 lead going into the final period.

For the game, Brutus Robinson scored 12 points and Thadan Yandell added 10 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Gunner Shelby with eight points, Eli Hefflin with seven points, Chevy Cole with six points and Cason Newcomer with five points.

In the season-ending loss to Union City, the Tigers doubled the Warriors 24-12 in the opening quarter, but the Warriors used a 2521 second period to cut their deficit to 45-37 at halftime. However, the Tigers outscored the Warriors 23-13 in the second half to preserve their victory — and end the Warriors’ season.

In defeat, Robinson led Webbers Falls with 16 points, followed by Hefflin with nine points, Shelby, Cole and Newcomer with seven points each and Yandell with four points.

In the girls’ seasonending loss to South Coffeyville, the Lady Lions jumped out to a 12-8 lead after a quarter, but a 17-6 second period put them ahead 29-14 at halftime. The Lady Warriors cut their deficit to 40-28 thanks to a 14-11 third quarter, but they got no closer.

In defeat, Allie Patterson scored 10 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Katie Frazier and Paizley Turley with nine points each, Hannah Kay Mason with five points, Peyton Shanks with four points and Madison Smith with three points.
