Vian Wolverines beat Checotah JV, fall to Preston, Muldrow
By David Seeley Sports Editor

The Vian Wolverines beat the Checotah Wildcats junior varsity 12-1 in four innings on the opening day of the Central Tiger Shootout last Thursday afternoon.

However, that ended up being their only win as the Wolverines opened the week with a 13-1 three-inning road loss to Preston on April 6 and ended the week with a 5-1 loss to Muldrow last Friday afternoon in the Central Tiger Shootout semifinals.

Their final day of action in the tournament was rained out due to Friday evening’s showers. The final day of action has not been rescheduled as of press time.

In the win over the Checotah JV, the Wolverines (12-11) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after an inning, and a sevenrun fourth inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Michael Polecat was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored, while Manny Terrill was 2-for-2 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored for Vian.

Polecat (5-2) got the complete-game victory, fanning six batters in four innings.

In the loss to Preston, the Pirates, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, Division II, scored three runs for a 3-0 lead after an inning, which became a 12-1 advantage after two innings. A run in the third inning put the game into run-rule status.

In defeat, Terrill’s single was the only hit for the Wolverines.

Chris Cheater (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season, lasting only 1.1 innings with a strikeout. Clayton Thomas pitched an inning with a strikeout.

In the loss to Muldrow, the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead after an inning. After the Wolverines cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning, the ’Dogs scored once in the fourth inning and twice in the sixth inning to put away the game.

In defeat, Drake Collins, Jeremiah Marshall and Draighton Fletcher each singled for Vian’s three hits off Muldrow starting pitcher jace Prewett.

Fletcher (1-2) took the loss, despite striking out seven batters in four innings. Terrill went the final two innings with three Ks.
