The Vian Wolverines ended last week as the fourth-place team in last weekend’s Checotah Crossroads Classic as they lost 11-2 in four innings to Sequoyah-Tahlequah in last Saturday afternoon’s thirdplace game.
The Wolverines opened the tournament with a 4-3 win over Haskell last Thursday before losing 16-1 in four innings to Oktaha in the championship semifinals on Friday.
Last week got started in a wild fashion as the Wolverines outlasted the host Gore Pirates 13-10 on April 13 in Gore before winning a 7-5 road game against Wilburton on April 14.
In the come-frombehind win over Gore, the Wolverines used a couple of big innings to rally from a 3-0 first-inning deficit. Down 3-0 after an inning, the Wolverines (15-13) scored four runs in the second inning and twice in the third inning for a 6-3 lead.
After the Pirates scored twice in the third inning to cut their deficit to 6-5 after three innings, the Wolverines used a six-run fourth inning for a 12-5 lead.
For the game, Draighton Fletcher was 3-for-4 with two doubles, four runs batted in and a run scored, Riley Elils was 3-for-4 with two doubles, four runs scored and an RBI, Clayton Thomas was 2-for-4 with with four RBIs and a run scored and Jeremiah Marshall doubled with an RBI and a run scored for Vian.
Michael Polecat (63) got the win in relief, going the final three innings with five strikeouts. After starting pitcher Chris Cheater failed to get an out in the opening inning, Zayden Cheater entered and went four innings with two strikeouts.
In the road victory over Wilburton, the Wolverines rallied from a 4-1 first-inning deficit with a four-run third inning and single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 7-4 lead after five innings. The Diggers scored once in the sixth inning but got no closer.
For the game, Fletcher was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, Polecat was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, Marshall was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored and Adoff Stahl was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Vian.
Fletcher (2-2) got the win as he struck out six batters in six innings. Thomas got his first save of the season as he pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout.
In the tournament win over Haskell, the Wolverines broke a 3-all tie with an unearned run in the fifth inning.
For the game, Stahl was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Drake Collins doubled with an RBI for Vian.
Chris Cheater (2-1) got the win in relief, going the final 3.2 innings with two strikeouts. Manny Terrill got the start and went the first 3.1 innings with three Ks.
In the tournament loss to Oktaha, Oktaha pitcher Carter McKinzie three-hit the Wolverines.
The Tigers broke a 1-all tie with an eightrun second inning, a five-run third inning and a two-run fourth inning to put the game into run-rule status.
In defeat, Fletcher singled and scored Vian’s lone run, Terrill singled with an RBI and Polecat singled for Vian.
Polecat suffered the loss, going two innings with a strikeout. Thomas went the final two innings with a strikeout.
In the tournament loss to Sequoyah-Tahlequah, the Indians put away the game early with a pair of four-run innings in the first and second innings for an 8-0 lead. A three-run third inning put the game into run-rule status.
In defeat, Terrill hit a solo home run, his first of the season, Thomas singled with an RBI and Polecat singled for Vian.
Zayden Cheater (4-2) suffered the loss, going just 1.2 innings with a strikeout. Rylan Lane pitched an inning in relief with a strikeout before Marshall went the final 1.1 innings with a strikeout.
